What Is the Nivan Creative Duel? The Story Behind Our Signature Format
Most conferences ask you to sit still and watch. We wanted to build the opposite. Something alive, a little combustible, and impossible to look away from. That instinct became the Nivan Creative Duel™.
What it is
The Nivan Creative Duel is a live debate. Two sharp minds take opposite sides of a tension that has no clean answer, and they go at it in front of the room. A moderator keeps the questions coming and the exchange civil, then steps back and lets the ideas collide.
It is fast, unscripted, and entirely human. No slides to hide behind. Just two people thinking on their feet, defending a real position, while the room leans in for every turn.
At Nivan 2026 we ran three:
Personalization versus Privacy.
Human Judgment versus AI Assistance.
Scale versus Craft.
Each one is a tension the best people in Tech, AI, UX, and Design actually wrestle with, which is exactly why the debates crackled. Expect real disagreement, quick thinking, and a steady stream of laughter and sharp, witty exchanges. It is built for the sparks, the moment someone lands a line that reframes the whole room.
Why we created it
We kept noticing the same thing at events. The most memorable moments were never the perfectly rehearsed ones. They were the unscripted ones, where you could feel a real person working through a real problem in front of you.
So we designed for that on purpose. The Creative Duel exists to make the invisible visible: the instincts, the choices, the judgment calls that usually stay hidden inside someone's head. In an AI first world, that human judgment is the most interesting thing in the room, and we wanted to put it center stage.
Where it began
The Nivan Creative Duel was born at Nivan 2026, our Innovation conference, on May 21, 2026 at the Institute of Design at Illinois Tech. It became one of the signature experiences of the day, alongside Innovation Portals, Time Capsule, and Message to Future. The response told us it deserved a stage of its own.
What makes it different
Plenty of events talk about creativity. The Creative Duel makes you watch it, in real time, with nothing staged. That is what people remember, and that is what they tell others about afterward.
What is next
The Creative Duel is now becoming its own event. An intimate, high energy evening built entirely around the format audiences loved most.
